I had a wonderful time with these girls in the Eastern Orthodox Church. They were very pleasant towards me. The girl above, Mika, studying English and speaking it quite well shared a bit about her life in this community.
Perhaps a bit blurry but I took these quick shots. This photo of a little boy is a priceless shot. Just on his way home from school he comes to church to light a candle and kiss an icon. Dov was very impressed with the piety of the people. Crossing themselves with intention at the door and kissing the side of the door which had the varnish worn off. One young man biking past the church made the sign of the cross three times and continued.
One of the women sitting outside the Eastern Orthodox Church selling a few things like flowers to people going inside.
All the sidewalks are like this...or worse.
Tobacco is a big thing here. So also is gambling...many small gambling shops. This woman is selling very ornate sausages. I thought they were candles. It made a lot of people laugh.
I really enjoyed interacting with the street vendors. The best way to do so is to buy some simple thing from them. This stooped old woman sold us black sunset seeds. When we gave her 1 euro ($1.50) she kept pouring scoops of them into a paper cone bag until we told her to stop. She was ecstatic with the money we gave her! Her face was lit up like the sun with appreciation. How little did she know that she gave me the gift of connection. She blew kisses as we walked away, hand on her heart! Memories...like that will last forever in my own heart and are the priceless gifts I bring home.
A typical scene...sitting...in a world of their own.
A woman selling a few things on a box, and she gave me these flowers; would not take any money....what can you say?
A little boy walking to his home. A pathway into a very different life than ours.

SEPT/09 SOCHI, RUSSIA (BLACK SEA)
Sunset over the Black Sea, after a day of climbing amongst the Ancient Caucasian trees and limestone formations. Took this photo from the dining room!
A very guided tour, other than a $300 visa....straight to a strip mall. Quite an experience...only wanted to deal with local currency even though we all were told euros were fine. The people very wary with only a couple of smiles...children and some teens. The river runs from the Caucasus to the Black Sea. Along this area is a strolling park with fountains and a small playland.
Ancient Caucaian Trees 1.8 million years ago, this reserve, about 300 metres, was under the ocean. Along the walkway was a maze of sedimentary layering about 5 metres high, turning at right angles through the ancient forest. Excretions from sea life in the layering. Amazing to walk amongst this. Wonderful photos for my collection of 'pathways and portals' The trees are mainly boxwood and yew which is part of the Caucasian Biosphere Reserve.
It began to thunder, lightning and gently rain. Quite a magical experience and I mainly walked alone as the group hurried ahead of me. I loved the forest smells and also being alone. Very, very slippery on the limestone underfoot...had to hang on to railings and roots, etc. Actually quite the endurance test for me, with my bad cough, sinus infection. From this it turned into bronchitis and pleursy. Am taking medication and getting more rest and sleep. Hah...the trouble with group tours is that you cannot go your own pace. No indication either that this was to be such a climb but I am very, very happy that I saw this and got such amazing photos!

ISTANBUL, Turkey!!!!
We are presently sailing through the Dardenelles towards Istanbul...sept. 26 A night of strolling along through its streets. Overnight in the harbour. Another full day here seeing some mosques, palaces, etc.
Cannot get photos to load. Very busy in the internet on the ship. Very hard to keep up with the ports, seeing things, relaxing and the internet.
Yesterday, got stung by a wasp, second time this summer; this time my hand became very swollen, hot and achy. This morning to the dr. and am now on medicine and it seems to be letting up. Otherwise, all is good.
From here we enter the Black Sea. As you can see from the posts we are seeing an amazing number of ports, etc. This is a far too fast pace for me. Am looking forward to the Black Sea, places I've never seen.
*********************************************************************************
The first night here we took a taxi from the ferry up to Tenzine Square from where there are a large number of promenades running along modern shops and older-style markets. I felt like I was finally in an exotic place with the smells and sights of Turkey. About 6 years ago Jennifer and I were here for a l wk away from Israel. It brought back great memories and now I have new ones. Yes, things are busier than before, more modern but still the same exciting Istanbul and I re-discovered my old sidewalk cafe.
**********************************************************************************
The next day was a visit to the Treasury at the Tokpali Palace to see Ottoman treasures. Then to the Blue Mosque which was fantastic followed by a visit to the Grand Bazaar. Good times and a few treasures later.
***********************************************************************************
Left Istanbul ll pm , sailed under 2 bridges, and headed for the open waters of the Black Sea!

SEPT/09 OLMPIA, Greece; NAFLION, Greece
Bee-hive shaped burial chamber about 30 ft. high inside. Close to Mycenae ancient site
Ancient Mycenae site. Gold masks were found here but now in Athens Museum. 1600-1000 BC Mycenae era. Hills in the background were of the Argalon area....famous hilltop fortress overlooking the ocean for defense, long abandoned. Area now famous for oranges and wine.

SEPT/09 SAN MARGUERITA, PORTIFINO, Italy; ELBA,Italy; ROME, Italy (In Process)
Elba, the island where Napoleon spent his last years. In the background, our ship peaking around the harbour.
A great spot for photos...enjoy!
From one of the decks of the ship. Right at eye level with everything and a most terrific spot for 'sail away'!
I hunkered down here to write under a blanket and prepared for 'sail away'
Close-up of the buildings. Again those earthy colours which delight the eye.
Moving away...
Good-bye to Elba..
As dusk begins to settle and soon to get ready for dinner... Rome was next....at least for Dov.
Portofino, Italy A lovely scene wandering the passageways of Portofino, Italy.
Such is the intensity here.
A simple row boat waiting for a night's row in the harbour.

Cafes line all sides of this small bay of Portofino.
This is the tender to take us back to our ship.
One of the most beautiful stained glass windows to be found in San Savatore Abbey and ...more photos later.
How time moves along; was here Sept. 18. It is now Oct. 31st. Time to catch up.....so here goes. On returning to the bus, the church bells here in Sestri Levante, near San Marguerita, Italy, chimed their 12 strokes. I always love it...and I was just in time.
Instead of gargoyles in stone, people now paint them above their doors. Think I should add this to mine in Coquitlam?
One of the ancient faces above these doors in Sestri Levante, a seaside village along the Italian Riveria. I loved this old face; reminded me of a picture of Casanova when he was old.
The griffin...part eagle, part lion...is popular in this part of Europe...and also been showing up in my life in various ways. It represents the Church and Royalty...
I loved the colours of the buildings...earth tones.
View from where I enjoyed a pot of afternoon tea. This is the 'Bay of Silence'....and it was calm and peaceful. Exactly what I needed as I wrote. On the other side of the peninsula is another bay ;Bay of Fairy Tales', named by Hans Christian Anderson who spent lots of time here writing his fairy tales. 'The Littlest Mermaid' is supposed to have been written overlooking these waters.

Quite the spot...which I wish I could have taken with me...the water lapping just below me.
San Salvatore Abbey surrounded by grapes. A very old abbey and lord's home across from it.

I am taking a survey. I would like to know which of these photos you prefer....and why. You can comment in the comment box below.

The very old and intricate cobblestone courtyard outside the abbey and the lord's house. Lots of cats in the sun.
I lit 2 candles here...one for myself for protection in my travels and one for my friend, Dolores, back home who was in hospice after a long fight with breast cancer. I got word from her sister that she passed away about l month ago. She was one of the group of us who graduted from high school together and was a doctor.
